With 25 years of communication-education experience, Dr. Brubaker is a dedicated and helpful resource for individuals, families, and organizations who are looking to engage in meaningful and productive discourse. After earning a Masters in Mass Communication and Journalism from The Ohio State University (‘99) and a Ph.D. in Communication Studies (Political Communication) from Kent State University (‘05), Jen has spent over two decades teaching (University of North Carolina Wilmington), researching, writing, and publishing innovative content in the fields of political communication, including media, persuasion and integrated marketing communication, and family communication.
Dr. Brubaker has become a strong influence as a public scholar through her internationally-followed family communication and self-development focused podcast, “Reframing Me.” A published author and researcher, she is also a leading scholar in political communication, primarily focusing on political brand and the role of celebrity in U.S. politics.
This unique combination has made Dr. Brubaker a strong public scholar in family communication, political communication and branding, leading the conversation on the political divide within families and providing expertise to bridge existing relationship divisions, encourage civil discourse, and mend and preserve interpersonal relationships within a challenging political environment.
We may not be able to change (or "fix") others’ opinions, but we can change our communication with them about politics.
Reframing the Conversation teaches you how to communicate with others about politics, especially when their political views are different than yours. Restore peace and civil discourse in your family.
My interest in politics developed out of my time working as the Special Assistant to the Mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, in the early 2000s. Recognizing the important role that communication plays in political campaigns and government, I began a 20+ year career focused on studying, researching, writing, presenting, and teaching on speech writing, persuasion, social media, journalism, media coverage, and celebrity endorsements. Most notably, my research on the role of celebrity endorsements in politics grew from some of my early-career journal articles to eventually become the book “Celebrity and the American Political Process (2020),” making me a highly cited expert on the subject. My most recent publication addresses political branding in 2020 and 2022 political campaigns. Google Scholar
As a person, outside of work, nothing is more important to me than my family. My husband of 23 years and I enjoy celebrating every moment with our three teenagers (and 4 rescue dogs, one cat (thinks she’s a dog) and (free range) bunny, but watching sports (professional and theirs) and traveling the world together are our favorite things. I am a lifelong yogi and fitness enthusiast who begins every day with meditation and intention, and never lets a day go by without fitness and movement- the two things that keep my soul at peace.
